August 2009 letter from the Altrusa Foundation
The Muncie Altrusa Foundation is not a committee of the Altrusa Club of Muncie, but a separate, stand-alone corporation established to receive and administer assets for charitable and special needs, as well as activities, in the Muncie Community.
In 1982, Fern McNary, Former District Six Governor, realized that it was unlikely that bequests and memorials of Altrusa members would be made to the International Altrusa Foundation. If there was a local foundation, these kinds of contributions would be made here and then used locally. The idea took hold because it gave individuals, organizations and corporations in the Muncie Community, as well as Altrusans, a place to contribute to a tax-exempt fund that fills a need in the community not met by other sources.
The grant monies given by Fern McNary and other monies given in her honor are a restricted fund from which the interest is given for literacy projects. When the Riley-Jones Club disbanded, funds were given to the Muncie Altrusa Foundation.
The interest from this fund is restricted and given for educational purposes for Delaware Country females over the age of 18.
This past month Ethel Himelick, a member of the first Board of Directors of the Muncie Altrusa Foundation, Inc, left a legacy to be used for scholarships to the School of Business at Ball State University. This will become a restricted fund in her honor.
Other donations, unless specified, including Good News Dollars are placed into the principle of the General Fund. The interest from this fund is used for the other grants given throughout the year. Every donation, whether large or small, makes a difference. The more the principle grows, the more money available to help our community. Every year the Grants Committee has far more requests than money. Please continue to remember the Muncie Altrusa Foundation with your memorials and honorariums.
