Service Projects
Altrusa Club of Muncie provides both long and short term
financial support for the needs of worthy community groups and individuals.
Our Club contributes to the
International Altrusa Foundation
in support of its thrust to eliminate illiteracy. Locally, our club conducts a
strong literacy program and financially supports a variety of philanthropic
projects.

Literacy Service Projects

Head Start Books - over 230 books are presented to children in the
local Head Start programs.

GED Recognition - pens are presented to GED graduates each year in
recognition of their accomplishment.

Make A Difference Day - in honor of the national make a difference
day, Altrusans develop a specific project to create literacy awareness.

Essay Contest - Fourth grade students throughout Delaware County are invited to write an essay on "Why I Must
Know How to Read". Essays are judged and winners
receive a certificate at the Altrusa luncheon. Over 800 students from
public, private and home schools participate.

Youth Development Service Projects

Senior Recognition - recognizes outstanding high school senior women
for accomplishments.
The
May program meeting featured the Youth Development Committee Senior
Recognition Program. The wonderful and talented young women pictured
represent the best of Delaware County’s eleven (11) high schools.

- Service Committee
- Explores ways to provide projects,
services and scholarships to further the success of women and families in
the community.
- During the 2008 fiscal year, the Service
Committee provided 150 sack lunches to the Harvest Soup Kitchen, held two
educational dinners for the women served by A Better Way, awarded
scholarships to non-traditional women enrolled at Ivy Tech and Ball State
University, and provided needed furniture, bedding, appliances, and
carpeting to the Wayside Mission.

Award winning project - Wayside Mission Educational Center
2007 Recipient of the Mamie L. Bass Award Altrusa International, Inc. of Muncie, Inc,
placed 2nd in the Altrusa
International and 1st place in District 6 Mamie L. Bass competitions. More than
$35,000 in grants, donations, and funding was obtained to renovate an
educational center for homeless women and children in Muncie, IN. The Service
Committee donated more than 500 hours of painting, cleaning, and coordinating
the project during the 2005-2007 club years. The project was carried out under
the leadership of Aumalee Crandall, project manager and committee chairs:
Sherrell Bryant, 2004-2005; Patsy Donn, 2005-2006; and Peggy Garrett, 2006-2007.
CONGRATULATIONS to all members of the Service Committee and Altrusan volunteers.
